Licensure is the symbol of a professional.  Today, no matter what career path a professional engineer chooses, a successful, ongoing career virtually requires PE licensure and this refresher course is intended to assist those planning to take the Electrical and Computer-Power PE Exam in their studies.

This live eight week course (three evenings per week) is taught by an expert licensed faculty member with over forty years of experience in all facets of power engineering.  This course is specially designed to help you prepare for the exam by segmenting the exam into digestible components and delivering the most probable question areas as published by the people who develop these exams.  The topics covered will be:

  • Mathematics
  • Basic Theory and DC Circuits
  • Field Theory and AC Circuits
  • Circuit Theory
  • Electromagnetic Devices
  • System Analysis
  • Measurement and Instrumentation
  • Generation
  • Distribution
  • Electrical Analysis
  • Transmission
  • System Protection and Safety
  • Rotating Machinery
  • Power Electronics
  • Power System Performance
  • Special Applications
  • Electrical materials
  • Codes and Standards

Attend all the sessions – or just those that you need.  The focus of the course is problem solving in the actual exam format with typical questions which you answer and then see a step by step solution the following week with handouts for further individual study or comparison.  There are no lectures, only problem presentation, discussion and solutions.  The refresher reinforces the methodology for problem solving, and provides structure for your preparation.  While this is a review course, it is no guarantee of successfully passing the PE exam.

Instructor:

Mike Kelly, PE
Instructor, UMKC School of Computing & Engineering

Mr. Kelly retired as Black & Veatch’s Head – Power System Study Group in 2005 and has been teaching power engineering on a full time basis ever since.  Mr. Kelly is currently a faculty member of UMKC’s School of Computing & Engineering and is developing a Power Lab for the reemergence of power engineering primarily due to the recent developments in power electronics.

Mr. Kelly has a BSEE from UMR and is a member of MSPE, NSPE, PEPP and a senior member of IEEE.

Who Should Attend?
Engineers who are planning to take the Power PE Exam in October, 2012 or April, 2013.  Licensed, professional engineers may find this course useful for updating skills in areas outside their normal practice with the benefit of earning PDHs for re-licensure.  By taking this course, a PE qualifies for three PDHs for each technical session attended.
